The Awami League (AL)-led grand alliance ended a series of meetings last night to decide about whether to take part in the hotly disputed January 22 elections. AL President Sheikh Hasina will formally declare a unanimous alliance decision at a joint press conference today. A highly placed AL source last night said the grand alliance decided to boycott and prevent the January 22 elections and there is no environment to go to the polls.
Earlier in the day, Jatiya Party (JP) and Liberal Democratic Party called for elections boycott in resolutions after their presidium meetings and informed the AL leadership of it. JP presidium member and former Prime Minister Kazi Zafar Ahmed said "JP has no existence without Chairman Ershad and as his nominations were cancelled, they have decided not to participate in the elections". He also added as JP is a partner of the Grand Alliance, what decision they take is final and he hopes they will be empathetic to JP.
